Review:
O Gauge Sprung Bogies
Athearn's O Gauge sprung bogies.
Cost: $4.99 (US Dollars)
Supplied by Kings Hobby, Austin TX
Available from all good hobby stores.
Athearn, best known for their HO scale offerings
also have a range of O scale bogies that, while developed for 1:48, fit in nicely under
any 7mm scale kit, or handbuilt car. Fully sprung and self centering, these bogies look as
good as they run.
Made of black coloured Delrin, the bogies were free
of flash and molding marks. Supplied in a card topped bag, they come as a kit of parts to
make two (2) bogies.
Construction is straight forward, however, one
complaint is the lack of any printed material to guide you through your first attempt. A
test fit of the parts however will provide you with the answers you need.
Construction requires that you assemble bolster and
truck sides, then the spring keeper plates across the bottom of the trucks before placing
the six (6) springs into position.
The springs are kept in place by moulded pins that
fit into the end of the spring on both the bolster and the and the truck sideframe keeper
plate. There is plenty of movement available for even the worst laid track and with the
springs in place the bogies want to centre themselves after any turning action.
To make the bogies run better I advise the
following:
- Weight your cars, to partially depress the bolster
springs and allow the bogie to float, and
- Replace the plastic wheelset with a metal
replacement.
This will add to the cost of the bogie, however it
will also improve the running quality of the thing enormously.
