The Plymouth Project
From Silk Purse to sows ear
Ideas on rebuilding Atlas'
Plymouth Shunter
Introduction
While no longer commercially available, the Atlas (Roco) Plymouth Shunter, makes a
good starting point for those looking at getting started in O scale on the cheap. Why the
(Roco) in the first sentence? These units were made for Atlas by the Roco company of
Austria. They are very well manufactured and are extremely reliable runners for their size
and good value.
I got my units new in the early eighties as they
were going out of stock in most places. However, I have seen them second hand at model
railway shows in Australia, and at swap meets here in the states in the last three years
on regular occasions. I expect there are others out there waiting to be found.
Ebay, (www.ebay.com)
or one of the other on-line auction houses, may be able to help you find a model if you
cannot find them elsewhere. But do try the model railway magazines too. You will find a
list of sources on our Links pages. An advert
placed in the Wanted section of the classifieds may bring you better luck.
